2017 Stan Boston Merit Competition.

UNDERDOG WINS 2017 STAN BOSTON MERIT

The Final  Night produced a shock win for Royton Cricket “B” team player, Keith Gledhill.

The second division player, whose team was relegated this season to the third division,

produced an eye catching display of Crown Green Bowling on the damp but perfect Springhead Liberals Green.

In a final that Gledhill started on top form to go into a 7-1 lead, Nimble Nook “B” player Mike Doherty stuck back to lead 17-11 at the 22nd end. With a run seven ends up the side of the green including three doubles  Gledhill beat Mark Doherty  21-17 to take the £80 Prize and the Trophy.

A delighted Gledhill said “I didn’t expect to be here this long, I should be playing Snooker nowback at the club”.

Gledhill beat Mike Flitcroft, who struggled to find a length 21-13 in the Quarters and then

produced his best form to beat Hodson 21-17 in what was Gledhills best game of the night.

The Draw threw together the two favourites, Alan Hodson and Paul Heap in the Quarter finals, Hodson just edged it to win 21-17 in a fine display of bowling.

Doherty had a fine first game to beat Hollinwood's Mike Hall 21-5, and then went on to re-produce that form to eliminate his Nook”B  team mate Peter Duce 21-17 in the Semi- Final.

Duce had earlier beat Saddleworth's Sam Casey in a 21-20 thriller that was settled by a close measure.

But the night ended with a victory for the accuracy of the underdog Keith Gledhill and a kick in teeth to those who say this Competition is only for the ”Stars”, welcome to the “stars” Keith.

2017 PRESIDENTS HANDICAP

DRAGON'S LEISHMAN WINS PRESIDENT HANDICAP

George & Dragons Colin Leishman won the Chadderton League  Presidents Handicap with a hard fought 21-11 win over Springhead's Paul Stephenson last night on a immaculate Shaw Comrades Green.

Leishmans abililty to play various marks all over the green was a telling factor in the final but he had played well all evening with 21-16 & 21-12 victories over Wilf McDermott and Barry Dickinson respectively.Earlier Dickinson had played some great bowls against Springhead's David Clayton who went down 21-12.

After beating an out of form Martin Hodson 21-3 and a game win over Mick O'Donnell 21-17,who had earlier beaten Brian Gaskel 21-20, after being 20-13 behind, Paul Stephenson played well all night on a swinging round peg mark over the crown that his opponents found hard to master.

The League wishes to thank Shaw Comrades Club for their Hospitality and the preparation of the green which was superb, and the finalists themselves for a Great Evening of Crown Green Bowling at its best.  Well Done !!!
